  • Becker (1997) is so right when he describes the pervasive issue in dysfunctional lives is the denial of death.  One reason that fear of death and denial of death are so warping to a person is that persons are only properly existent within their boundaries.
Death is a fundamental boundary.  Fear and denial of a fundamental boundary is to fear and deny part of one’s person-ness.
It is like being afraid of and denying that you can’t see when you close your eyes.  What kind of elaborate story would you need to tell yourself in order to deal with the fear and denial about what happens when you close your eyes?
Being able to existentially face death without fear is not only desirable from a “feelings” standpoint, it is crucial to one’s very personhood.
(Where, O Death, is thy sting?)
